Imagine you laying in your bathtub with the water at the perfect temperature. Candles stand on the sides. A calm music plays in the background. Does it sound relaxing to you?
Unfortunately, baths aren’t as relaxing for the environment. With the amount of water needed to fill it up, taking a bath is everything but ecological friendly. Hence, the question arises, how much water to fill a bathtub?
Bath or shower?
How much water to fill a bathtub? Usually, a rectangular bathtub of 1,700 x 700 mm needs around from 135L and 165L to be full. On the opposite, an angle bath needs from 220L to 300L. Nevertheless, as you may know, the large bath is the one consuming the most water. Therefore, 330L to 550L will be required to fill it. Compare to a shower, it uses way more water. However, this information is more detailed in our article How to save water at home.
Everything depends on your shower setting and the time you spend showering. In average a showerhead offers a water flow of 12L/min. Some with more advanced technology can reduce this consumption to 9L or even 7L. You may be familiar with the technology EcoJoy from Hansgrohe, as an example. When it comes to overhead showers, for the greediest they can let through up to 29 litres of water per minutes.
Hence, to save up this precious resource, you can turn off the water when washing your body or hair. Letting the water run for 15 minutes straight at a water flow of 12L/min uses 180L. Then, more water is consumed than with a regular bathtub.
Tips to use less water
If you do not want to feel guilty after taking a bath, here are some tips that will help you.
To reduce your water consumption, you can as an example, choose a small bathtub. It will require less water to be full. Also, you do not need to fill up the bath completely.
Another useful tip is to recycle the water by linking it to the toilet. Thereby, when flushing, you won’t use crystal clear water. To do so, you only need a tank to store the water from the bathtub and connect it to the drainage pipe from the toilet. For a family of 4 people, with one person going in the toilet 4 times a day, a flush that uses 6 litres for every use. You could expect saving up to 96L/day with this simple solution. As profitable for the environment as it is for your wallet.
Now you know how much water you use whenever you fill a bathtub. If you have further questions, do not hesitate to ask them in the comment section. We would be happy to hear from you.
